Full Job Description

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Solicitor to work within the Large and Complex Loss department in our Cardiff Office assisting a Partner.

Working directly with the Head of the Large and Complex Injury Group this is a great opportunity for someone to progress their career at HF.

The role will include post litigation claims involving large loss with high value cases of £3,000,000 upwards including indemnity disputes, liability and quantum.

The team deals with claims involving complex injuries, brain injuries, spinal injuries and amputations predominantly following a RTA.

You will be working in a small team of experienced professionals in an engaging and driven environment. This will be a challenging yet rewarding role as not only do we promote strong relationships and results for our clients we also promote strong working relationships within the team.

Personal and Technical Skills

  • Assisting a Partner on large loss catastrophic PI claims under supervision up to the value of £30,000,000

  • Assisting on the day to day running of their files to include reviewing evidence, drafting correspondence, court documents etc

  • Managing court timetables and ensuring all court dates are diarised

  • Preparing / reviewing evidence

  • Dealing with extensive disclosure

  • Advising clients on tactics and reviewing evidence

  • Preparing court documents

  • Attending conferences with experts / clients / counsel

  • Attending court / telephone hearings and representing the client for hearings where appropriate

  • Interviewing witnesses and experts to obtain witness statements

  • Maintain strong working relationships with clients ensuring deadlines and SLA's are met

  • To collect, update and report on MI

  • Maintain high standards of professional conduct while achieving agreed financial and other performance targets

  • Exhibit and promote a high level of technical competence within your department

  • Depending on level of experience opportunity to manage your own large loss cases in excess of £250,000 in due course

  • Give clear, practical advice with sound commercial judgment where appropriate and swift and accurate implementation of instructions

  • Assist with mentoring and development of junior members of the team where appropriate

  • Commercially aware and fully familiar with the firm's strategy.

  • Prepare for and help deliver presentations (seminars, marketing functions, training sessions etc.) when required by the Partnership as part of our added value services to our clients

  • Undertake networking activities to develop and enhance relationships with existing and new contacts

  • Participate in the growth and development of the department / firm by engaging with new initiatives


  • Compliance
  • Undertake compliance with, and be fully aware of, all aspects of requirements relating to the Solicitors' Accounts Rules and Law Society Practice Management Standards

  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of all firm and client documentation, information and data

  • Ensure strict adherence to all relevant data protection regulations throughout the business

  • Comply with the firm's policies, practices and procedures

    Be a Solicitor with 3-6 years PQE (or equivalent experience)

  • Have litigation experience.

  • Have prior experience in defending Large Loss / CAT PI claims whether as an assistant or in their own right

  • Have strong organisation skills and an ability to consistently meet deadlines.

  • Be a good communicator and enjoy building relationships whilst providing clear and concise advice.

  • Wish to learn new skills and acquire technical expertise.

  • Work well in a team and under supervision

  • Excellent attention to detail, negotiation and analytical skills.

  • Not be afraid to question and challenge information and evidence put forward by the parties (and their representatives) in a case.

  • Have a commercial awareness to legal issues

  • Be flexible with a positive attitude to change, both internally and in the context of clients' business
