Full Job Description
The Fermentation Scientist will be part of the Fermentation Team, supporting R+D and day-to-day operations of the fermentation laboratories. Responsibilities will include:
- Running of bench-top and multi parallel fermentations (Ambr250)
- Aiding in the planning of Fermentation work and associated activities.
- Helping the planning and design of experimentation - in conjunction with Lead and Senior Fermentation Scientist, ensuring appropriate process parameters are set and adhered to.
- Data/experimental review - Ensure experimental data is complete, accurate and contemporaneous and that any deviations from plans are investigated and corrective and preventative measures are communicated, identified and acted upon
- Data interpretation - Utilise multiple data sets to come to definitive conclusions from experimental data. Aid in review of data presented from team and advise/correct accordingly
- Presentation of data - Ensure coherent results, conclusions and recommendations for future work
- Troubleshooting - Identify any areas that require troubleshooting - equipment, process and/or planning
- Part of multi-disciplinary team - Attend meetings and feedback/present as required
- Maintain appropriate records i.e. HR, Quality, Inventory etc
- Help audit areas as appropriate and define improvement plans
- Ensure equipment is fully maintained and workspace is clean, tidy and ordered and equipment inventory is up to date.
- Be appropriately trained for the role and are maintain up to date training records
- Ensure SOPs are complete, correct and up to date
- BSc in biological sciences, chemical engineering or similar
- 2-3 years relevant work experience in a laboratory environment
- Hands-on experience of running fermentations.
- An understanding of microbiology culturing techniques and working with aseptic technique.
- Experience in the use of conventional laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifugation, microscope, spectrophotometer, pH meter).
- Experience of following standard operating procedures and record keeping
- Experienced in data processing and management and in reporting of results to wider team
- Good communicator and flexible team player that is committed to the success of the team.
- Good time management and organisational skills.
- Experience of running an Ambr250 system
- Experience of data analysis by R or similar
- Experience of DOE experiments and software
- Experience in troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience of using an electronic lab book.
- Knowledge of quality management and control measures
The role will involve coordinating work with other teams, therefore excellent record keeping and verbal communication skills are a necessity. The nature of the work will mean that from time to time, this may include working over a weekend and with flexible hours.
