Full Job Description

The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages are seeking to appoint a highly organised and proactive Departmental Lecturer in German to join our Friendly team.
This post is to cover the absence of the substantive postholder, who is taking a period of leave. The post is available until 30 September 2025.
The post will involve advanced teaching and academic research in German.
The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of German within the Sub-Faculty of German by offering 16 hours of lectures or seminars per year (to be determined in consultation with the Sub-Faculty, but drawing on the appointee's expertise). They will also be responsible for providing undergraduate tuition in German language and literature at Jesus College and Oriel College, and playing a part in running Modern Languages in the Colleges.
Concerning the appointee's duties at Jesus and Oriel, the lecturer will be required to give on average eight contact hours per week of tutorials during the eight-week term, and to be available during both term and for some periods of the students' vacation to offer organizational and pastoral support. They will also be required to be fully involved in Undergraduate Admissions in weeks 9 and 10 of Michaelmas Term. Together with the College's other tutors in Modern Languages and Joint Schools, the lecturer will be expected to share pastoral and organizational responsibility for Jesus and Oriel students reading German.
