As an Aerial Surveyor, you will have the thrilling opportunity to work with cutting-edge aerial survey equipment to capture accurate elevation data. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a dynamic environment and the excitement of exploring new horizons.

You will get to spend time on board a light aircraft capturing remotely sensed data using a variety of instruments. This includes the collection of LIDAR, Aerial Photography and Hyperspectral data to help the delivery of our work programmes.

You will be an essential member of a technical, dynamic and committed team of Aerial Surveyors capturing data across England. This data will inform policy and decision makers across the Environment Agency and DEFRA. This will in turn help us to create a better place for people and wildlife.

Our survey aircraft capture data on 24/7/365 basis when the weather conditions allow. Because of this we work flexibly both during day and night hours including weekends and bank holidays. In reward for this you will receive a 20% shift allowance on top of the basic pay.

You be integrated into our small friendly team of adept surveyors to deliver high quality data using teamwork and dynamic autonomous decision making. In addition to this you will have the opportunity to engage with aerial survey planning, data management and survey equipment mobilisation.

The opportunity is based at our operations office at East Midlands Airport.

You will also be become an integrated member of the Geomatics Aerial Survey incident response team providing a valuable bird's eye view of any flood events across England.

The Aerial Survey Team is part of the Monitoring Survey Team within National Monitoring. We deliver geomatics services within the Environment Agency and the wider environmental community. We are focused on delivering the highest quality data providing a fully integrated approach to the delivery of geo-information. Combining cutting edge technology and skilled personnel we work to the highest scientific and ethical standards to provide accurate and high quality GIS ready products.

You require a degree in Geography, Survey, Environmental Science or another relevant scientific or technical subject.

Full bespoke training will be provided by our experienced team members, with expectation that you will ultimately make operational judgments and troubleshoot issues unaided.

In addition, being able to demonstrate the following skills through education and/or work is required:

  • Health Safety and Wellbeing in a field-based environment

  • Proven and adaptable ICT skills

  • Works well in teams

  • Decision making and troubleshooting with positive outcomes


  • A full UK driving license is required for this role.
